Most graffiti books are photo dumps — walls, trains, no context. Paris Characters is the opposite. Karim Boukercha, one of the most serious writers on French graffiti, sat down with 45 artists from the Parisian scene and ran long interviews with each, so the book is carried by text and oral history as much as by images. You get the thinking behind the work, not just the finished pieces.

The focus is characters specifically — the figures, mascots and narrative painting that run alongside letters in graffiti — and how 45 writers each approached them: crew mascots, storytelling, standalone figurative work, and the careers built around it. Names include Mode 2, Lokiss, Alex, Jay, N°6, Skuki and 39 others who shaped character work on walls, trains and rooftops.

Across 248 pages it runs over 600 photographs and illustrations, a lot of it previously unpublished — archival photos, sketches and murals pulled together into one place. Released in 2004, it's become a scarce document of the French scene from that moment, and the writing is in French throughout.
